A scribe is one who says the words of others; the one who speaks with authority has realised his own invisibility, so that when he says God and man are one, he knows it. Neville reports a listener who preferred another teacher: 'Dr. X says the same thing, that God is man, but when Neville says it he sounds as if he meant it. But when Dr. X says it we know he does not mean it.' He cannot restrain the feeling of authority, because he knows it from his own mystical experience - and to the one who speaks so, do not say 'turn the stones into bread', for he will answer 'Get thee behind me!'
