Scripture offers two diets and a man may choose either. The first is feasting on the bread and fish, the loaves and fishes: imagine that you have what you desire, persist in that state, and you will get anything in this world - better health, a finer job, a larger world - and everyone is invited to feast on it. The second is the bread and wine, and it does something to a man that not one in a billion would believe; they despaired when they heard of it. It has nothing to do with a cup of wine or a little wafer: it is the spirit of forgiveness, 'the mutual point of forgiveness between enemies, the birthplace of the Lamb of God', and to eat that bread and drink that wine is the unconditional forgiveness of sin. But no one can eat it until he distinguishes the individual from the state the individual occupies - then he can take the most horrible beast in the world, embrace him, pull him out of the state he has fallen into and set him in a nobler one. Do that and you prepare the way for the birth of the Lamb of God; a man who takes Communion every Sunday and is not changed has not tasted it.
