Before the driving out we were dead: fully made and perfect, but like the statue of Galatea - finished and unquickened. To quicken man and make him like God, God had to drive him out, not in space but in mind, and become the thing that was dead, lowering himself to a level which by comparison with the higher states is called death. The image holds the two halves together: nothing was missing from the made man except life, and life could only be given by the maker entering it.
