A friend who flew up from San Diego - navy man, always owned boats, but had never seen this from the air - looked down as the plane took off and saw a thirty-footer coming the other way. He watched its wake widen, with nothing interrupting it, and as the plane turned inland at three hundred miles an hour he realised that this little boat doing maybe thirty knots was troubling the entire Pacific: as far as the eye could see the wake was moving, nothing could stop it, and the man in the boat was completely unaware of what he was doing. We are all like that. You think you can imagine and not affect others? It starts as a little v and grows wider, and in time it encompasses the whole world. Even a man in solitary confinement is disturbing the whole vast world and will never be accused of it - which is exactly why it matters to imagine wisely.
