Luke 16 taken as the warrant for revision. The steward alters his master's accounts and is commended for it, and Neville reads this as approval of a definite practice: we may change our world by an illegal one - by a falsification of the facts, an intentional alteration of what we have experienced - and all of it done in imagination. It is a form of falsehood that is not condemned but actually approved in the gospel teaching, and by it a man destroys the causes of evil and acquires friends; the master's high praise proves the falsifier deserving of confidence. Applied to others, the unjust steward looking at another's distress represents that other to himself as he ought to be seen; applied to himself, he enters his own dream house and falls asleep feeling as he would feel were it already so. 'Would that all the Lord's people were unjust stewards, mentally falsifying the facts of life to deliver individuals forever more.'
