Six months after the birth of the child, a vibration like the one that preceded the birth begins again, this time centred at the top of the head; then a sudden explosion, and Neville finds himself in a modestly furnished room where a lad of about twelve leans against the side of an open door. He is ruddy, with beautiful eyes and very handsome - David as the first book of Samuel describes him. Neville does not feel himself to be anyone other than Neville, yet he knows this lad is his son and the lad knows he is his father. The vision is read as a sign and a portent: a chamber in man's imagination is engraved with every patriarch and character of the Old Testament, and once the child has been born out of the skull, the patriarchs begin to resurrect, each in his turn revealed as the son of the man who resurrects him. When all are raised, that man knows himself to be of the Elohim.
