Melchizedek appears three times in scripture - Genesis, once in the Psalms, again in Hebrews - as one with no genealogy, no father, no mother, no beginning of days and no end of days; and Jesus, the first raised from the dead, is made a member of that order. Neville makes it the terminus of the whole process. That which was created had a beginning, but God, falling in love with his own creation, sinks himself into it and reveals his first creative act as the creature's own son. To be the father of that son is to have no origin, because he has none: the created thing is transformed into something beginningless. He calls this the great mystery - I did have an author, he created me, and yet, having been created, he wipes out beginnings altogether.
