The Shema, called the greatest of all the commandments, read with 'Lord' restored to its meaning. The word translated Lord is I AM, so the verse says: our I AM is one I AM. There is not your little 'I am' and my little 'I am' - there is only one, in all of us individually, and it is the same one. The commandment that follows is therefore the hardest thing Neville asks of an audience: thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and soul and might means love your own I AM that completely - and this, he says, is precisely what we are accused of not doing, because we bend the knee to a wooden object, a thing carved out of marble, an image hung round the neck, and praise the artist who carved it. Turn to the only God, which is your own wonderful I AM, and nothing is impossible; turn to any other and the face is hidden.
