The first sign recorded in Mark - the heavens opening and the Spirit like a dove descending - told as Neville's own experience, and he notes that no one could have witnessed it but the one it descended on, so Mark can only have had it from him. In his telling the heavens open suddenly on nothing but infinity, translucence, infinite expansion, and a dove of a light beige colour hovers above him, alive, looking at him, anchored on him without effort. He raises his hand - the left - and it perches on his index finger; he brings it to his face and it smothers him with kisses over his head and ears and neck. He heard no voice saying 'this is my beloved son'; he heard a woman on his left say 'He loves you'. She then explained why birds do not come near man: to them we are a large consuming bowel giving off a most offensive odour, and they avoid contact - but this one pierced that ring of odours out of love. The dove is not only gentleness and peace but the creative power of God, and the kisses are that power being transferred. Neville dates his own experience of it to the 1st of January 1963, a week before this telling, and remarks on the reversal: the first sign in Mark has been the last of his experiences, and the ones Mark records at the end came to him first.
