THE READING: Job's two ways of knowing are taken as the whole difference between inherited religion and experience. What a man has of God by hearing - from parents, from a church, from a book, however devoutly held - is the hearing of the ear, and it is not disparaged so much as dated: it is what everyone has before anything happens. What replaces it cannot be argued for or handed on, because it is sight. The turn is not from error to truth but from report to vision, which is why Job says it at the end and not at the beginning, and why Neville sets John 1:17 beside it - the law came by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ - grace being the thing nobody earns by the quality of the hearing.
