In hell the only voice is the voice of self-righteousness; in heaven all is forgiven, and the voice of heaven is the complete forgiveness of sin no matter what a man has ever done. Job, listing his virtues - he never turned away an infant, a fatherless child, a widow or a stranger - is stewing in his own self-righteousness and is therefore in hell while still walking the earth, as we are whenever we are full of it. Neville turns it on his audience without softening: if I reflect tonight on any good thing I think I did, that is all self-righteousness, and it does not earn me one step. Do good because you want to, but the idea of banking it is to be forgotten. No one can be good enough to earn God's gift.
