Job 42:10 as the hinge of the book's ending. Jehovah tells the three comforters that they lied about him and that Job spoke truly, orders them to sacrifice, and then sends them to Job to ask Job to pray for them - and when Job prays for his friends, his own captivity is lifted. Neville makes the mechanism explicit: you forget yourself entirely in the love of a friend in need and, without raising a finger, lift him out of one state and put him into another, whatever he has been in the past. He was only expressing a state, he was never the state he expressed; we condemned him thinking he was the state. So the whole book turns on one man's ability to forgive - and the deliverance is reciprocal. Asked in the question period what would have happened had Job not prayed for them, Neville answers that he would never have learned he was himself only in a state.
