When Saul asks the youth 'whose son are you?', David answers 'I am the son of thy servant Jesse' - and Jesse is the root of the verb to be, any form of it, the root of JOD HE VAU HE which we render Jehovah. So David is telling the king that his father is the only God. Neville then presses the textual point: all scholars agree the genealogy given to David in Ruth and Chronicles was added, and the Encyclopedia Biblica - which he calls the most comprehensive work on scripture in existence - reports that in the earliest known Hebrew manuscripts there is no father beyond Jesse. Men trying to make sense of it traced the line back to Adam, and that is what stands in Luke and Matthew now, but the oldest manuscripts simply stop. Jesse has no genealogy and no background, like Melchizedek, because God has no father: I AM has nothing behind it and no origin of ties in itself.
