Neville's exception to his own rule. Every other character in scripture is a state of consciousness, but Paul he would swear actually walked the face of the earth. The story as he tells it: Paul present when the first Christian martyr, Stephen, was stoned to death, consenting to that death, with the coats of the stoners laid at the feet of Saul; then the journey to Damascus carrying letters to the high priest, pledged to bring anyone belonging to the Way bound to Jerusalem; then the blinding light on that road, the whole thing revealed, and the name transformed from Saul to Paul. He is read as the first in whom the vision took place, the initial awakened being, and the resurrection that is now taking place in everyone took place first in him. What Neville draws from it is encouragement rather than authority: the revelation came not to a mystic but to a violent enforcer of the outer law, so violence in support of an external observance is no disqualification. The story ends before King Agrippa, in chains for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers. CONTRADICTION ON THE RECORD (PM 6039, from the attach lane, logged 2026-09-20). Neville does not hold this claim consistently, and the exceptions should not be smoothed away. At 1777 (P544589) he says that whoever Paul was, he is not named in any non-biblical source. At 1860 (P547182) he puts Saul-to-Paul beside the observation that we have no record of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John as characters either - which treats Paul as a name like the rest. The attach lane has deliberately attached both passages here, at 0.6-0.85, so that the claim and its qualification sit together rather than in separate motifs, and that is the right arrangement: a reader of this motif should meet the counter-evidence inside it. Two further lectures, titled Who Paul Really Is (1055) and The State of Paul (1226), lie ahead of the chronological read and may settle it; until they are read this motif asserts the claim and records that Neville also undercut it.
