The definition Neville returns to when he has to say what Christianity is: not a creed, not an ethic and not a biography, but the affirmation that a series of events happened in which God revealed himself in action for the salvation of man. He states it twice in the one lecture and draws the same consequence both times - the events are the Way, and the Way is a series of mystical experiences rather than a man to be followed home. Luke records the series; the hearer is the being spoken of in it; and the series carries him up to fatherhood. This is why 'I am the way' cannot mean an example to imitate: the way is the sequence itself, and no one comes to the Father except by going through it.
