Teaching pattern

The Bible read as one continuous document with one subject: not a product of human beings but the history of man's discovery, by God's revelation, of the changing name of God - and the name changes as man becomes able to bear it. First, in Genesis 4:26, a child is born called Enosh, which means mortal man, something fragile that simply wears out and disappears, and men begin to call upon the name of the Lord; but they do not yet know what they are calling upon. Second, at Genesis 32, Jacob wrestles until daybreak and asks the name outright, and God refuses to give it; the place is called Peniel, the face of God, and what man at that level took for the creative power of the universe was the sinew upon the thigh, which is why phallic images stand in every part of the world. Neville answers that stage on its own terms rather than dismissing it: nothing man has devised, not the missile that can reach the sun nor the nuclear bomb, compares to the brain of the child that conceived them. Third, at Exodus 3, the name is given as I AM, and it is his name forever. Fourth and last, in the New Testament, the name is revealed as Father - in many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, and if he has spoken by a son then he is a father. The instruction attached to the sequence never varies: until the last name is revealed to you, use the second one, and use it wisely. The second stage belongs to M97, the second name to M543 and the last name to M742; this motif is the sequence that holds them in order.
