John 14:8-9 used against the request that sounds most pious. Philip asks to be shown the Father and says that will be enough, and the answer is a rebuke framed as a complaint about elapsed time - I have been so long with you and yet you do not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father, how then can you say show us the Father? The request cannot be granted because it has already been answered, and what is being asked for is standing in front of the man asking. Neville presses it into the identity he teaches: Jesus Christ by his own confession is God the Father, so the son who was given cannot be the being who calls himself Father, and anyone still looking for a Father elsewhere is looking for himself. He uses it both ways round - to refuse the demand for an external God, and to license the claim that the man who has seen the end of the series has seen everything there is to see.
