The stoning in scripture read as an act performed with facts rather than rocks. Stone does not mean that people pick up stones and throw them, as they will do; the stones are the literal facts of life, picked up in the mental hand and shown to you - where you were born, how old you are, the limits of your background, intellectual, financial and social - so that the facts contradict the claim you have made. It is what was done when he said I am God: they told him they knew his father and mother, named the four brothers and implied the sisters, and then began to show him the facts of life. Neville does not advise arguing, because that mind knows the physical background exactly and nothing said to it can be heard - he disappeared out of their midst. The same stoning is described in its kindly form, done by people who have no idea they are doing it: you aren't feeling well, are you? And in its everyday form, the bricks thrown at anyone whose achievement has not caught up with what he promised - at a president, at the Pope, at the Queen of England, at a friend who once told you his ambition.
