Neville's own evidence for guilelessness, given as the state he was in when he was taken into the presence of the Most High. In the deep Depression he did not know where to find a nickel, and a nickel was the subway fare, so he would walk fifty blocks from his little place in the village in the hope of finding a friend who would give him a quarter - not lend it against collateral, give it - and walk the fifty blocks back. There were four mouths to feed: his dancing partner and her parents. With a quarter he would buy vegetables and a little olive oil. Many days he found no friend with a quarter, and the point of the story is what happened on those days: he passed the places with the trays all exposed and could not take one piece of lettuce. He went back hungry and told them about his day. He is precise that it was incapacity and not restraint - I couldn't lift a thing from anyone who I hadn't paid, it wasn't mine - and that the vision came to him while he was in that state. He tells it again at 1327 in a plainer form, walking fifty blocks to find a friend with a dime for soup beans: he had seen those who had more than they needed, did not take from them, and simply pulled in his belt. A witness is named in the room - a lady who came to his very first meeting, along with his wife - which is how he offers the story as checkable rather than edifying.
