Isaiah 11:1 read with the name decoded. Jesse means I AM, which is Jehovah, whose root meaning Neville gives as to fall, or causatively to cause to fall - so the only being that ever fell, this tree of life, is God himself, and he fell for our salvation. The stump is therefore I AM, and the Branch that comes out of it is neither a tree nor a man but the thing that grows in a man; the imagery turns, in the middle of the prophecy, from a root and a stem into a person on whom the Spirit of the Lord rests - the spirit of wisdom and understanding, of counsel and might, of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, where fear means reverence and the awe of God and not fear as we understand it. The Branch takes root only when the Word is heard and accepted: the stump cannot put out a shoot until it has first heard the Word of God, and once the shoot comes it cannot be stopped. FULLEST ELABORATION, told this way only in 1086: the four gospels are four presentations of the one Branch, each answering a separate Branch prophecy. Matthew presents him as king (Jeremiah 23:5, I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king) and therefore gives the genealogy of a king, traced forward from the source of the dynasty rather than backward from a father. Mark presents him as the ideal servant (Zechariah 3:8, Behold, I will bring forth my servant the Branch) and therefore needs no genealogy at all, because to be the servant of the Lord is credential enough. Luke presents him as Jehovah's ideal man (Zechariah 6:12, Behold the man whose name is the Branch) and therefore gives a genealogy running unbroken back to Adam, the son of God. John presents him as God himself (Isaiah 4:2, the branch of Jehovah will be beautiful and glorious) and needs none. The two genealogies part at David - Luke through Nathan, Matthew through Solomon - which Neville says only looks like a contradiction to people who do not know that all the characters are states of consciousness.
