A translation point Neville uses to put Luke's preface on the same footing as his own platform. Luke says he wrote his orderly account for Theophilus having observed all things closely for some time past - and the phrase rendered 'for some time past' is the Greek Anothin, the identical word, unaltered, that is rendered 'from above' in the third chapter of John, where Nicodemus is told that except he be born from above he cannot enter the kingdom. So Luke is not claiming diligence or better sources; he is telling you where he got it. Neville draws two further consequences from the same verse. First, Luke makes no claim that his arrangement is the original chronology: he begins with a birth and ends with a crucifixion because that is better understood by mortal minds until they have had the experience, and it is not the order in which he received it. Second, Theophilus is not a patron but anyone who loves God, so the account is addressed to the reader. He adds that Luke is not a name either - the whole thing is anonymous.
