2 Samuel 7:12-14, which Neville treats as the root promise of the whole New Testament, read with two hinges. First, it is delivered as a vision and he says so: Nathan received it, and according to all these words and according to all this vision, Nathan spoke unto David. Second, it makes one figure two things at once. If the son is raised up after David and comes forth from David's body, then he is the son of David and therefore the Son of man; and if the Lord then says I will be his father and he shall be my son, then he is the Son of God. That double sonship is what the question in Matthew 16 turns on, and it is why the Son of man and the Son of God are not two people. Neville turns the other clause on the audience: when your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers - you are the fathers, you have already fulfilled your day in preparation, and you are now sleeping with the fathers, sound asleep and not knowing it, which is exactly why you are certain you are awake. And the coming-forth is read strictly rather than poetically: something is being formed inside this garment of flesh and brought out of it, so it can be called the son of a man because it came out of a man, and God's son because God claims it - man's offspring and God's Son in one act.
