Neville's example of what a man who is incapable of hurting can do. Carver would take a flower in his hand and talk to it, and would ask a sick flower what was wrong with it so that it could tell him the remedy for the rose bush - which, Neville says, it did. He took the ordinary little peanut and asked it what it was for and why God had made it, and the peanut communed with him; today there are three hundred by-products from the peanut and hundreds more from the southern pine. Neville heard him speak the year he died, at the Herald Tribune's annual forum at the old Waldorf Astoria in New York, answering the worry that the world could not be fed tomorrow: from the southern states alone, forgetting the northern states, we could feed and clothe the entire world out of by-products - and he called it the synthetic world. The point Neville draws is about the man and not the chemistry: born a slave, sold, he thinks, for a horse, and one of the spiritual giants of the world because he could not hurt; if you met him beyond the grave you would see a glorious being like a Blake. It is offered as the proof of the lecture's one practical instruction - teach a child never unnecessarily to hurt a creature or desecrate a flower, because that is the beginning of reverence, and reverence is the beginning of wisdom.
