Isaiah 43, quoted so often that it functions as Neville's proof text for where salvation comes from: I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior, and besides me there is no savior; I know not any. No one was formed before me and no one will be formed after me. The argument he builds on it is short - if God brought a savior to humanity he had to bring himself, and his name is I AM - so the being who saves you is the being who says I am in you, and no other savior is coming. That is why he can say there is only one being in the world who can hit the mark, and it is God, and in the same breath that you are saved from what you are by daring to assume that you are what you would be: who forgave you? I assumed. Who assumed? I assumed - well, that is God. The verse also does the negative work: it forbids waiting for an external deliverer, which is the same denial the no-intermediary motif makes about priests and churches, and this one makes about saviours. A child of that motif. RULED 2026-09-20 (PM 6056). This motif was coined under a reading of the lexicon boundary that I was not confident in, and I said at the time that it might have to move. The ruling has since come and went the other way: the lexicon holds only bare identity equations that function as a dictionary gloss, while a reading of a specific verse and a teaching claim Neville argues or applies are motifs. Isaiah 43:11 as he uses it is the former, so this motif is correctly in the catalogue and should not be moved. (A note to this effect was added to two sister motifs at the same time; those two carried the caveat in their own descriptions and this one did not, so an earlier version of this note wrongly said it had. That sentence stood for about two minutes and is corrected here rather than removed.)
