Neville's own demonstration, and the one he tells more often than any other. Drafted and stationed two thousand miles from home, he applied for a discharge and the application came back disapproved - signed, in the tellings that name him, by Colonel Theodore Bilbough Jr. He did not pray to be let out. He sat on the army cot and assumed instead that he was sleeping in his own bed in his own home in New York City, staying in it until it took on all the tones of naturalness and reality; then in imagination he got off that bed, looked through the window east and west at what he would see were it true, walked through the apartment, went back to bed and lost consciousness in that state. At about four in the morning there came before his eyes a smooth sheet of paper resembling the application, and a hand from the wrist down holding a pen; the pen scratched out the word Disapproved and wrote in, in bold script, the word Approved. Then a voice said: that which I have done, I have done. Do nothing. He did nothing, and nine days later the very officer who had disapproved it called him in and gave him an honourable discharge, writing the same word in the same bold type - the outer confirmation of what had already been settled in the depth of his soul. He keeps one further detail attached to it: the friend who corrected the manuscript of his book had never had a vision, and persuaded him to cut the episode out, on the grounds that readers would think they needed a vision to make the law work. So it is missing from the book and he tells it from the platform instead. What he was saved from he states without softening - to him the army was the most confined, restricted state he had ever known, and the whole vast world is a world of freedom.
