Paul's chain of questions in Romans 10:13-17, which Neville treats as a description of the present state of the world rather than as a missionary argument. Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved - everyone, no one excluded. But how can men call upon him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how can they hear without a preacher? And how can there be a preacher unless he is sent? Therefore faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the preaching of Christ. The force of it for Neville is that the name is unknown: there is only one name for God and it is I AM, and three billion people have never heard that this is the name, because those who tell them are not sent and give them Jesus or Jehovah or Moses or some other name instead. So the failure is not of faith but of information - men believe in God, in the president, in the power of the country, in the money in the bank, in everything outside of I AM - and the sending is what repairs it: to be called is to be sent, because to be rescued from something carries with it being sent to do something, and the thing one is sent to do is to tell people who he is.
