One of Neville's shortest case histories and his standard illustration of calling with the name rather than upon it. A lady had a small home badly in need of repair and painting, and she had no money for it. So she went to sleep smelling paint - and Neville takes the sentence apart to show what she was really saying: who is smelling paint? I am smelling paint. Who is seeing the thing repaired, before it was repaired? I am. Who is paying the bills? I am. She kept it up night after night for about three weeks. Then a letter came bringing several thousand dollars from a woman she had never seen and never met: years before she had done her a small kindness, finding out for her how her brother had died and where he was buried, and writing three letters about it over the course of a year. The woman had since died and had named her in her will. The figures move between tellings - seven thousand five hundred here, eight or nine thousand elsewhere, Lloyd's of England as the source in one - but the shape never changes, and neither does the point Neville draws from it: the repairs came to eight or nine hundred, so she had almost seven thousand left over, and it arrived from the one quarter she could not have plotted.
