Neville's correction of what he calls the strangest concept in the world - that Isaac was a child got in the ordinary way. The Lord begot Isaac, and Isaac is to be thought of not as the result of generation but as the shaping of the unbegotten. God is the unbegotten; he is not begotten and has no origin; and what he is doing on this body is shaping himself upon it. When that shape is perfect in his own eye, the man is born from above. So the flesh is a mould and not the thing moulded: this garment cannot inherit the kingdom, because what is being moulded upon it is God, and God being Spirit is moulding himself as Spirit, the immortal you. The consequence Neville presses is the one that sounds like blasphemy: if the unbegotten gives me himself, then I am unbegotten, so I who seemingly had a beginning in time now cease to be begotten - no genealogy, no father, no mother, which is what the order of Melchizedek says of itself. It is also why he says he has never once had a change of identity: through all of it he has always been aware of being I am, with something taking place in him, and that something was God.
