A passage Neville quotes in about ten lectures and attributes to Blake: do not let yourself be intimidated by the horror of the world, for everything is ordered and correct and must fulfil its destiny in order to achieve perfection. NOTE ON ATTRIBUTION: the lines are Rilke's, from the letters, not Blake's - the misattribution is Neville's own and is repeated consistently, so it should be recorded rather than corrected in the occurrences. He uses it to license a reading of history that would otherwise be intolerable: God planned it exactly as it has come out, it will be consummated, and no tyrant is going to stop it, because he will take all the tyrants of the world and use them for the fulfilment of his purpose. Proverbs 16:4 is set beside it - God made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble - with the application made personal: if it takes a wicked being crossing your path to add a little more fire and bring you closer to the image of God, he will cross it, and if it takes many they will cross it. Asked about it in the question period, Neville gives the practical use: believing this, you can accept what without this knowledge you would be unwilling or unable to accept when you read of man's inhumanity to man, because nothing is wasted in God's kingdom.
