Neville's standing warning about where the sense of who matters comes from. Read this morning's paper: ninety-nine per cent of it, including the advertisements, was paid for - and if you like something advertised you will buy it, which is perfectly all right, because you know it was paid for. What you do not know is that the news items were paid for too. That has been concealed. There is not one person in the public eye who does not maintain a press relationship; they have been glamorised into some name other than press agents, but they take money month after month and place the little items you read morning, noon and night, and you believe them to be true. The same argument turns up around the celebrity rather than the newspaper: how many times have you heard someone ask, who do you think I saw today, and name some highly publicised person whose press agent has been paid a fortune to keep them alive in the press. Neville says a publicised individual means nothing to him, and that with enough money he could take any press agent and manufacture the same effect. The sting is always the same and it is scriptural: while you were impressed by the man whose image was built to his own satisfaction, among you stood one whom you did not know - and he was Christ Jesus. It sits beside the Damrosch story as the other half of one point: reputation is purchased, revelation is not.
