Luke 11:21-23, which Neville reads by putting the weight on the sentence that seems not to belong. When a strong man fully armed guards his own palace his goods are in peace; but when one stronger than he assails him and overcomes him, he takes from him the armour in which he trusted and divides his spoil. And then, as though it were an afterthought: he who is not with me is against me, he who does not gather with me scatters. Neville says that apparently irrelevant line throws all the light in the world on the scene before it. The strong man is whatever presently guards one's world and holds its goods in peace - the beliefs, the authorities, the securities - and the stronger one who assails him is Christ, the power and wisdom of God, who strips the armour that was trusted in. What the afterthought adds is that there is no third position: no benevolent neutrality, none whatsoever. Neville draws the political comparison himself - the world has countries it calls neutralist, benevolently neutralist - and says scripture allows no such category. You are either with him or you are his enemy. It is the same absoluteness the pearl demands, stated as a law rather than as a price.
