Neville's standing instruction to anyone who wants to be married, and his clearest small demonstration that the technique works on implication rather than on wishing. Would you wear a ring? Then feel the ring. And he is exact about which one: do not feel a huge nugget there, because that precedes marriage and is no proof of it - a simple gold wedding band is the thing that would imply to the rest of the world that you are married. Then put the mood with it, which is the other half of the instruction and the half people drop: not merely married but happily married, proud of the one whose name you bear although you do not know the name, thrilled and clean and wholesome in the relationship. Go to bed feeling the ring - the one thing that would imply the fulfilment of the state. He gives the same rule to a man, who may not wear a ring but has something else he could feel, and who would be proud to say: I want you to meet my wife. Neville sets it beside his own escape from the other world, because both turn on the same discovery: touch is what makes a state real, and he emphasises the sense of feeling because he has proved it.
