A rule Neville states as scripture's own and then uses as an instrument. The Bible recognises only one source of dreams: all dreams proceed from God. He presses the word all - noble dreams sometimes and horrible dreams at other times, waking dreams called daydreams and the dreams of the night, and there is still only one origin. God is the dreamer in man, which is to say one's own wonderful human imagination; he has descended and is sound asleep in every being in the world, dreaming, and most of the dreams are nightmares - but in the end he will awake, and the whole thing will vanish from sight as a dream does, and you are he. What makes it a working rule rather than a doctrine is the inference he draws from it about his own visions: if all dreams proceed from God, then he does not have to go far to discover who God is, because whatever he saw came out of his own imagination. He uses it that way on the vision of the stone - sitting in the silence, attention turned inward on the dark convolutions of the brain until they grew luminous, and a rock appearing, the stone laid in Zion, the stone the builders rejected, which he identifies as the imagination he had himself rejected through years of searching for God elsewhere. It also makes Joseph the prototype: behold, this dreamer cometh - the dreamer put into a coffin, which is man.
