Psychological interpretation
A prayer has succeeded when desire is satisfied: one no longer hungers for what one already feels oneself to be, loses the wish to continue the meditation, and feels something go out, as after the physical creative act; persisting hunger means the state was not reached. Contemplation goes on until the feeling of satisfaction (Jericho's fragrance) comes.
