The ten lepers of Luke 17 used as a rule of expectation for his own practice. All ten asked for help and all ten were cured as they walked; one, the Samaritan, the stranger, turned back to say thank you, and the question put to him - were there not ten? where are the other nine? - is treated by Neville as a statistic rather than a rebuke. So he expects nine in ten never to report, and says so repeatedly without resentment: scripture teaches that only one in ten will do it, and the one in ten is enough for him. He gives reasons for the nine that are notably free of contempt. It happens so naturally in their lives that they conclude it would have happened anyway and so have nothing to report (compare M647, which is the same sentence used of the practitioner rather than of the person helped). And at 1909 he offers a second reason, which is the more humane one: they are afraid that thanks must be accompanied by a gift or a bill, and he needs neither. He draws two practical conclusions from it. He never asks whether it worked, because as far as he is concerned it happened at the moment he did it and he is not looking for confirmation (1137, 1754). And he keeps asking for the letters anyway, because he wants to share them from the platform, telling people it does not matter how badly they write so long as they tell it in the first person (1828). The ones who do return come back months or years later, by seeming accident, and tell him it worked.
