A piece of symbolism Neville knows will offend and states anyway: in the universal language of symbols, in every land and every age, the pig is the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. He cites The Lost Language of Symbolism for it (1124), where the sow with twenty suckling pigs nursing at once is the everlasting sustainer, and the two crowned pigs carry beneath them the initials of Jesus Christ or Christus Redemptor. He takes the refusal of pork as part of the same symbolism rather than as an unrelated custom: hundreds of millions will not touch the pig, and that is the refusal of the story of salvation - unless you eat my body and drink my blood you have no life in you (1296). THE OTHER DOOR INTO THIS MOTIF IS THE WORD STEWARD, and lanes should watch for it: at 1223 and 1296 he takes steward back to its root as the ward of the sty, the keeper of the pig, so the unjust steward is the keeper of the Saviour, and at 1223 the steward is memory. At 1780 the pig arrives in a dream of his own and is used against himself. He finds a small pig at closing time, feeds and shelters it as best he can; the scene changes to a supermarket and the pig is now tall and rangy, grown but badly fed. He reads it as the interval between his discovery that Christ is his own imagination and the present: every opportunity to use imagination lovingly on another was an opportunity to feed him, and the ones he let pass were neglect. He was hungry and I gave him nothing. So the symbol carries a reproach, not a doctrine.
