Proverbs 20:27 joined to Job 29:3 - the spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, and when his candle shines upon my head, by his light I walk through darkness. Neville takes it as the epigraph of the inner light, and at 1321 he uses it as George Russell (AE) used it, opening The Candle of Vision, before telling AE’s vision of the hall vaster than any cathedral with pillars of living trembling opal and the fire-crested Divine Kings on their thrones. At 1780 the verse arrives inside a dream of his own and is dated by it. In the dream his daughter pulls a package of crackers from the base of a pyramid in a supermarket, the whole stack collapses, and underneath is revealed a single lit candle four or five inches tall; the words of Job and Proverbs come rushing through his brain, and he says of it: that’s my candle, it must never again in eternity be covered, it’s now lit and it’ll be lit forever. The image therefore does two things at once - it names the faculty (the spirit of man, that is his imagination, is the lamp God reads by) and it marks an irreversibility, the uncovering that cannot be undone.
