Genesis 29 read as an instruction to the teacher. The shepherds gather at the well in the field; when all are gathered the stone is rolled away from the mouth of the well and the flock is watered; and then - the detail Neville will not let pass - the stone is rolled back. He raises the kindly reading only to dismiss it: you might say it is a courtesy, so that men walking over the field do not fall into an unprotected well, but that is not it at all. The stone goes back because you always put it back and leave the thing just as it is: do not change the words of God, and make no attempt to re-write scripture, which so many are always attempting in order to give it sense. So the well is the scripture, the water is the meaning drawn out of it for those who are gathered, and the covering is the refusal to leave one's own construction in place of the text. At 1843 the same detail is told with the sheep made explicit - we are the sheep of his pasture, watered by anyone who knows how to water, and then it is automatically rolled back. The architect ruled out-of-sequence coining acceptable on this condition (PM 6056). Occurrence confidence is 0.95 rather than 0.99 for that reason.
