A point of history Neville uses to prove that the trial is a play. Pilate tells the crowd 'you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover', and Neville reports flatly that no such custom can be found: as far back as man can go there is no evidence for it, no scholar or historian can find an amnesty at Passover, and it is not attested outside the gospel. He does not treat this as an embarrassment to be explained away but as a signal - therefore it is a mystery, and we have to start digging. The conclusion he draws at 1094 is that the whole thing is a play taking place at every moment of time, with the listener seated as the jury bringing in a verdict on the King of the Jews, who is Jesus, whose name is I AM, and so is every being in the world. At 1750 the same observation opens a different door: if the custom is not history then the aside that follows it - now Barabbas was a robber - must be read symbolically too, and he goes to John 10 for the robber who does not enter the sheepfold by the door. So the unattested amnesty is the hinge on which the Barabbas choice turns from a historical incident into a choice of states.
