Galatians 6:17 - henceforth let no one trouble me, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus - taken as a claim about completion, and stripped of the meaning the churches give it. The marks are not little holes in the hands, a crown of thorns, a gash in the side or bleeding feet; they are not the stigmata. Neville is careful here, because he has had something the world would mistake for them: the thrill beyond the wildest dream of being sucked in like a vortex, or a series of vortices - and he says outright that these are not the marks either. The marks are all written out in dramatic form in scripture, and they are the experiences a man undergoes in order: the resurrection first, when he awakens from profound sleep to find he was dead, because he awakes in a grave and only the dead are interred; then the birth, coming out of that sepulchre as a child comes out of a womb; then the discovery of David; then the splitting of the body from top to bottom and the ascent up the spinal cord into the skull. A man who bears them can say the work in him is complete and this is the last time. The phrase occurs in about eighteen lectures.
