He offers duplication as the warrant: he lives in the assumption, it crystallises, he tells the story, others duplicate it and tell others, and at the end of a few years there are hundreds of witnesses - so what the world thinks of the principle does not matter. The law is conditional and no respecter of persons: the kindest person in the world who begins to feel sorry for himself has entered a state that will bear that state's fruit, and he will have every reason to feel sorry for himself. The boundary Neville never lets slip is that this prosperity is not merit - no matter how wisely a man exercises the talent, it does not qualify him for the marks of Jesus, which are grace (M586).
