A vision Neville dates to about thirty-seven years before 1963. Sitting in the Silence, lost in contemplation, he sees before his inner eye a huge rock - flint at 1108, quartz at 1246 and 1379 - which breaks and scatters into many pieces; then invisible hands mould the fragments into the most beautiful figure of a meditating Buddha in the lotus posture. He is glued to it, and grows more and more excited as he realises he is looking at himself: he had never seen himself so glorious, and everything he could think of in the superlative was in that face. Then it becomes flesh, begins to glow, glows until it reaches the limit of luminosity, takes on the luminosity of a sun and explodes. He reads it as the answer to 1 John 3:2 - it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him and see him as he is - and as the shape of his own doctrine of the stone: we are as dead as stone in the beginning, and what comes out of it is the self raised to the apex of perfection, which you could not improve upon. At 1246 the fragments are given a further meaning - the gathering of all those within his world into one form, the Rock re-established, and I am he - and at 1379 it is told forward, as something that will one day happen to the hearer sitting quietly and not thinking of anything in particular.

For I saw the meditative figure, all out of stone. We are just dead as stone in the beginning. And here it broke, molding into something that was a statue. And then out of it came a glowing, living being and I am the being I am contemplating.

suddenly out of the nowhere came a stone, a rock. There’s nothing more sterile, nothing more opaque, nothing more contracted as far as imagery is concerned than a rock. So here was a rock, this quartz.

And it fragmented, the whole thing broke into unnumbered pieces. Not a piece was lost but re-gathered by some invisible hand. As it was re-gathered, it was not the original form, now it takes the form of man.
