2 Timothy 1:12 read on one pronoun. Paul, in his final letter, does not say he knows WHAT he has believed but WHOM - and Neville makes the contrast the whole point. Everyone will tell you what he believes: ask a Christian who knows the creed and he will repeat the Apostles' Creed, this is what he believes - and that, says Neville, is all theology and all the ceremonies of the outer world (1929). Paul's object is not a set of propositions but a person. The move that follows is the one this motif exists to record: Paul defines Christ as the power and the wisdom of God (M855), and **having defined it as power and wisdom, he personifies it, personalises it - because it is himself.** So an apparently impersonal power is discovered to have a face, and the face is the believer's own: he found it in himself, and you will never find him on the outside. It is the same observation Neville makes of his own experience at 1108 - that which seemed to be an impersonal power suddenly takes on human form and it is he - and it belongs with the claim that in eternity everything is human.
