Isaiah 61 read as a timetable. At the synagogue the reader had freedom of choice among the prophets, and the passage chosen was Isaiah 61 - the Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor, to open the prison doors, to set free all that are bound, and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. **He stops in the middle of the second verse, before the day of vengeance**, and Neville notes the stopping as deliberate. He then reports a reading from the earliest fathers, still in print, from the second century: that the acceptable year meant God's work was completed in a year - and says flatly that the father was right, in spite of all that has happened in the interval. His own case is the evidence: after the long exposure to suffering, the whole sequence - resurrection, birth, the discovery of David, the splitting of the temple and the ascent into Zion - takes one year, and happens in three nights spread across it. He sets the three nights beside 'in three days I will rebuild it'.
