The passage does double duty: it is the furnace of affliction (M584), and it is the proof that what goes through the fire is not what is refined by it - man is brought out pure gold and is the very being who walked through it all. The hell he sets around it is deliberately ordinary: the churches speak of hell and are in it without knowing, and a man consumed with a passion he cannot satisfy is in hell, and there is not a morning's paper without a page of it.
