The vision Neville gives as the fulfilment of Psalm 42:4, and the one place in the corpus where the identification is put to him out loud by someone else and answered by a voice that is not his. The psalmist, asked all day long where his God is, calls on a memory: these things I remember, when I went with the throng and led them in procession to the house of God, in joyful songs of thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival. Neville says the memory became his own. He is leading an enormous crowd in procession to the house of God when a voice rings out - And God walks with them. A woman at his side asks, if God walks with us, where is he? The voice answers, at your side. She turns, looks into his face, and breaks into derisive, hysterical laughter; it strikes her so funnily. Then she asks the voice: what, is Neville God? And the voice answers, yes, in the act of waking. The qualification is the whole doctrine in four words, and it is not Neville who supplies it. Then a second voice speaks within him that no one else hears: I laid myself down within you to sleep, and as I slept, I dreamed a dream - and he knows the end of the sentence before it is finished, that the dreamer is dreaming he is I, and when he wakes, he is I and I am he. At 1367 the telling ends with his body completely crucified at the moment he heard it. At 1920 the woman is described further: olive-skinned, dressed in the robes of an Arab woman. The vision travels with the taunt of the same psalm (M952): the procession is the memory the psalmist answers 'where is your God?' with, and it is the memory Neville answers it with too.
