Well, next day came another letter…I will not go through the entire thing. This friend writes, “In my dream I had this experience concerning the black. I saw this black, black young Negro, the blackest Negro you could ever see, and he was so scared, so frightened. Then came a woman, she looked to me like a Spanish woman. She had on a leather riding skirt, a black hat and a quirt fastened to the wrist. A quirt is simply a whip and you fasten it to the wrist. It’s really braided leather, that’s really what it is, a whip. And she walked over towards this man who was so scared and so frightened, and without emotion she flayed him. I protested. I rose from where I was and went forward to protest this awful unmerciful beating and a voice said to me, ‘That is how we move from darkness to light.’”339 ¶7
