Now here is another lady. She’s here tonight, too, both are here. Her letter is dated December the 2nd, only a few days ago, she said, “I found myself in my neighbor’s living room and in her living room all are dressed as Mennonites.” You know what the Mennonites look like…you’ve all seen pictures of them. They came to this country in the 17th Century and they’ve been here over 300 years. They originated in Zurich, Switzerland in the year 1525, and then they moved into Germany, into France, into parts of the north, and then into Belgium and Holland. Finally in the middle of the 17th Century they came here. They are supposed to number around 150,000 to 200,000 today. You’ve heard of the Amish…that’s a branch of them. Like all these groups they splinter and they become other groups. Just as Catholicism split into the east and the west, and then the western splintered into all the Protestant world and they splintered…they all splinter. So the Mennonites splintered…but they dress today as they dressed when they came here 300 years ago; there’s no change in their outward appearance. All the men dress in the same manner, all the women in the same manner, and the children in the same manner. Here is a fixed idea. So she saw all the people in the household in a fixed, fixed state over a period of 300 years…no change in one’s attitude towards life. It perpetuates itself year after year.691 ¶10
