A total stranger heard of me and came to ask to find a friend of hers, but it seemed the height of insanity when I told her what I would do. I would sit quietly and hear her tell me that she had found the friend, that’s all that I would do. And she would sit quietly and tell me she found the friend. She expected some magical something. So at the end of our little mental communion I bid her goodbye. She said, “That’s all?” “That’s all.” Well, she was so, well, disillusioned, for she thought she was going to see some fantastic thing take place in my room, and that’s all that she witnessed, something in the Silence, not believing me. But it worked. She took a friend to New Haven where she last heard from her friend. The friend had moved on to Boston. Went on to Boston, yes, they knew the friend, but she left no forwarding address, so she returned, disappointed, to New York City. Coming out of a department store on 14th Street, had she been five seconds earlier or five seconds later, she would have missed her, ran right into her. Then she went all the way to Boston via New Haven trying to find the friend.806 ¶27
