Here is a story to illustrate. He’s here tonight. I will only take two of his stories—he wrote me many—two that will illustrate this point, and many that were fantastic in the form of dreams; and they are all, I would say, revealing. So here is one, he said, “In my new home at the beach I decided with my wife and family to have a certain landscape. We decided what we wanted. When the whole decision was made, we called in…or rather bids…we invited five landscape artists for gardens to simply give their bids. Two wouldn’t even bid because of the soil, we’re at the beach, and they lose money when they take a contract of that nature because quite often two or three times they have to re-plant the entire thing. Things die before they can get something to take root. Well, we considered the best one, took the contract, and we had eighteen trees planted and about four dozen shrubs and vines. Well, as time went on, it was about two months, this was last fall, three of the eighteen trees died. They looked as though they were simply gone. I would drive home and I had to pass these three trees when I drove into the garage. Before I left the garage to enter my home, I simply remained in that garage and mentally I leaned against these trees and felt them to be alive. If there was no wind blowing to blow the leaves, in my mind’s eye I felt the pressure of my body against the trunk of the tree and felt the thing [...] and I [...] in this animated place, because I love a garden, especially trees.”835 ¶8
